The Security Council convened closed consultations today to discuss the Secretary-General’s report on the review of the future of all forms of United Nations peace operations. Council members received briefings from Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. Council members underscored the continued importance of UN peace operations as a key instrument available to the Security Council for the maintenance of international peace and security.
Members exchanged views on the report’s recommendations, including the need to ensure that peace operations adapt to meet evolving needs, to allow for more agile, tailored responses to existing, emerging and future challenges. Members expressed their support for UN peacekeeping and special political missions in advancing the Council’s primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, including through support to political processes, ceasefire monitoring, protection of civilians, and conflict prevention, as appropriate and in accordance with their respective mandates.
Members stressed that mandates authorized by the Council must be accompanied by sustained political backing, and the capabilities and resources required for their effective implementation.
Members indicated that they would continue to engage on the report and with the Secretariat, with a view to appropriately considering its recommendations.
