Thank you, Mr. President,

Mr. President, Denmark voted in favour of this resolution.

We did so with a grave sense of responsibility and a firm commitment to supporting all efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and to bring the hostilities in the Middle East to an end. Denmark is deeply concerned by the continued escalation across the region. For five weeks this conflict has raged, bringing with it more death and destruction by the day and further destabilisation of the already volatile and tense situation. Our vote today reflects our belief in the urgent need to address these developments.

Mr. President,

Iran’s attacks continue unabated against countries in the region and beyond. Denmark strongly condemns these continued attacks, which must stop immediately, and we express our full solidarity with all the countries concerned.

De-escalation and respect for international law, including international humanitarian law, are now more important than ever. All diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions must be pursued. We welcome any such efforts and call for negotiations to be resumed in good faith. We welcome the Secretary-General’s appointment of Jean Arnault as his Personal Envoy to lead UN efforts on the conflict in the Middle East and its consequences.

Mr. President,

Many aspects of this conflict have sent shockwaves across the globe. This is particularly true for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz caused by Iran’s actions. This closure is not only a disruption, but a dangerous escalation, measured in lives and livelihoods lost. Global growth and development depend on the freedom of navigation. The repercussions for the global economy and, increasingly, for food security, in particular across developing countries, are enormous.

As a great maritime nation, Denmark is committed to maritime security, to open sea lanes, and to the safety of all seafarers.

Mr. President,

Iran’s actions near and around the Strait of Hormuz constitute a threat to international peace and security. Iran must immediately cease all attacks and any other attempt to impede lawful transit passage in the Strait of Hormuz.

It is crucial to permanently restore safe passage and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz consistent with Security Council resolution 2817 and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

That is why Denmark voted in favour of this resolution.

While we strongly regret that it was not possible to adopt this resolution today due to the vetoes cast by two permanent members, Denmark remains committed to safeguarding peace, security and stability in the Middle East.

I thank you.
