18.09.2025 Explanation of vote on resolution on humanitarian access to Gaza

Thank you, Mr. President,
Denmark voted in favour of this resolution. We did so because we believe that this Council – as the custodian of international peace and security - has the responsibility to act decisively to address the situation in Gaza.
We deeply regret that it was not possible today.
By voting yes, Denmark voted in favour of responding to the catastrophic humanitarian situation, which has only deteriorated further with the confirmation of famine in Gaza and the expansion of the Israeli military operation in Gaza City.
Our yes vote is a message to the starving men, women and children: You are not forgotten.
It is a vote in favour of upholding international law demanding that the Government of Israel immediately and unconditionally lifts all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Trucks with life-saving aid are just waiting to be allowed to enter.
Israel must ensure the safe, sustained, and unhindered distribution to the civilian population.
Our vote is also a demand for the immediate, unconditional and dignified release of all the hostages that have been cruelly held by Hamas and other terrorist groups. It is a message to them and their families: Your freedom and well-being remain key to us.
Lastly, our vote is a vote for peace. A peace that will allow this manmade humanitarian catastrophe to be stopped. A vote for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire.
Mr. President,
Denmark has consistently condemned the terrorist attacks by Hamas and other terrorist groups on October 7th. What happened was inexcusable and we reiterate our firm condemnation of Hamas’ despicable acts.
We also consistently underlined that the fight against terrorism cannot come at the expense of the rules that safeguard humanity.
In closing, Mr. President,
Even though this resolution was not adopted today at the 10 000th meeting of the Council, 14 members of this Council have sent a clear message. We want to see an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and the urgent lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid. We will continue to work for this however many Council meetings it may take.
Thank you.
