Thank you, Chair,

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Kingdom of Denmark

With the attention given to Greenland in the last few months, I am pleased to take the floor today, to report on the most recent developments in Greenland.

On 7 April, a new government took office in Greenland. The new government is a broad coalition of four of the five parties in Inatsisartut, the Greenland parliament, representing 75 percent of the votes cast.

The new government is firmly committed to ensure stability and societal cohesion in Greenland, at a time where external actors seek to influence our national development.

In such a situation, the government of Greenland believes that it is decisive that we as a people, Kalaallit, the Greenland Inuit, and our political parties stand together to pave the way, for further enhancing our self-determination.

The government of Greenland will ensure a clear and realistic timeframe, for taking steps towards independence.

For the government of Greenland, this is not about turning our backs to others, but to take responsibility for our own future and for developing a nation, that is built on freedom, democratic principles, unity and our unique Arctic identity.

It is the firm position of my government – the Government of Greenland that the future of Greenland will be formed by us, and for us.

The forming of a new government in Greenland also comes at a time where the Kingdom of Denmark takes over the chairship of the Arctic Council.

It will be Greenland that takes on the leading role during the chairship. This reflects the Kingdom of Denmark’s firm commitment to the peoples of the Arctic.

The Arctic Council should be a forum that feels relevant for people living in the Arctic, not least Arctic Indigenous Peoples.

This also means that one of our focus areas will be on sustainable economic empowerment and development, while respecting our precious environment, biodiversity and in fighting climate change.

The Kingdom of Denmark wishes to work together with all parties that respects the development in the Arctic, based on UNDRIP and International law in general.

Qujanaq - Thank you, Chair.
