Chairs, excellencies,
First, let me congratulate the outgoing Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission on the achievements made in 2023. At a time with multiple and interlinked crises and the need for stronger collective problem solving, this Commission has advocated for peacebuilding priorities and needs. Thank you Your Excellency, Ambassador Šimonović and the team at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Croatia. Thank you for your dedication to the work of this Commission and for spearheading innovative ideas.
Denmark also wishes to congratulate Your Excellency, Ambassador França Danese with the election as Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission. We are sure the Commission will thrive under your leadership during this important year for peacebuilding - this year when we negotiate the Pact for the Future and prepare for the 2025 review of the Peacebuilding Architecture.
Also, a warm thank you to the outgoing vice-chairs Bangladesh and Germany, and a warm welcome to the incoming vice-chairs Croatia and Kenya.
Excellencies,
We see how this Commission contributes towards sustaining peace by bringing partners together, listening to national and regional peacebuilding priorities, mobilizing attention and resources, and promoting peacebuilding across the UN system.
As we embark on 2024, Denmark sees a need to strengthen efforts to implement and follow-up on the Commission’s pivotal gender strategy and action plan. Not the least by again increasing the rate of women peacebuilders as briefers. We must also respond to the demands by countries to take into account the consequences of climate change in context of peacebuilding efforts. Furthermore, we can continue to innovate and to strengthen the advicing and bridging roles of the Commission.
Denmark stands ready to continue working together towards increasing investment in and prioritization of prevention and peacebuilding.
I thank you.
